Workers worked, managers managed, and everyone knew their place. Forms and approvals and bureaucracy ruled the day. Welchs self-proclaimed revolution meant waging war on GEs old ways of doing things and reinventing the company from top to bottom. Today, GE with its unique learning culture and boundary-less organization is one of the most admired company’s in the world. Let’s follow the ATTITUDE formula in Part 2 of this 8 parts series: Would you like to find more value and acceptance in, “Who your boss IS” instead of focusing on who he isn’t? Would you like to find more value and acceptance in, “Your daily work expectations” instead of focusing on what isn’t your responsibility? Ask yourself, “Can I always get what I want?”… “How is what I am about to say or do going to impact the business relationship?” Let’s explore the 2nd attitude That will help you get out of your judgment of frustration or anxiety and put your focus back on your work relationship needs! Respect  â€" I think Jack Welch sums it up nicely in his chart below: Practice! We’re all smart people.   Of course everything you’re reading makes a whole lot of sense.   But like anything else, you MUST put the Attitude of Respect into practice! Go back to the questions earlier and utilize the Attitude of Respect. Respect allows you to “meet people where they’re at” instead of going into a situation with preconceived notions.   Building a tool box of useful attitudes will allow you to manage your frustration and anxiety…i.e. your judgment! For those who’ve been following, you’re aware that many of my posts focus on strategic and tactical ways to navigate through hiring, employee management, job searching, career management and so forth. What about those that simply want to make a change? Well, here are some words of encouragement for you! I’m not going to go all “What Color Is Your Parachute” on you. I would, however, like to offer some support based on my personal experiences as well as those I’ve witnessed throughout my life regarding career changes. I was a simple kid from a middle-class Chicago neighborhood. I somehow managed to scratch out an electrical engineering undergraduate degree. The day I threw my hat and tassel in the air, I shut the book on Ohm’s law in favor of technology consulting for a firm that was nice enough to give me a job. Somewhere along my seventeen-year technology-consulting career, I also managed to open a real estate investment company (which I continue to operate). In 2004, I created milewalk Inc., the executive search firm I currently manage. Since that time, I’ve become a multi-book author, blogger, speaker, TV and radio resource, and done many other media interviews. The only reason I’ve done the latter was because I felt I had something to say that might benefit more people than I could personally speak with. Hopefully my last paragraph didn’t turn your stomach. The only reason I shared my background is to illustrate that all people have a fork in the road every single day of their lives; everyâ€"singleâ€"dayâ€"they have a choice. Throughout mine, I consciously chose to ignore a few, was completely unaware of some, and took the road never traveled on others. If you keep an open mind, you will see yours. Life is too short to continue doing something you don’t love. Most people I encounter, whatever age they might be, forget that they chose their career at a very young age. Regardless of when you made that choice, you can always change your mind. If you’re a young adult, perhaps eighteen or twenty-two years old, entering the workforce for the first time, realize that you can always change careers if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. Life is full of wonderful ways to earn a living. Most people never act on new adventures. It’s my opinion that they would rather live with unhappiness than uncertainty. Instead of taking a chance, they hold themselves hostage, with decisions they made during their twenties serving as the shackles. Consequently, they keep plowing forward until they collect their Social Security checks. There are certainly a select few who are fortunate enough to love what they do for their entire careers. Most are not. I’m not sure about you, but I certainly don’t want a twenty-two-year-old to pick my career for meâ€"not even a twenty-two-year-old version of me. Realize the absolute worst scenario in the event you “fail” is to revert back to whatever it was you were doing before you made the attempt. I’m not quite sure who invented the expression, “There’s no turning back.” Whoever it was, he or she was sorely mistaken when it comes to the workforce. If any of them would have “failed,” they could have easily gone back to work in their previous field. This will only haunt you and leave you wondering, “what if I had asked for more?” There is definitely an art to crafting a negotiation that strikes the right balance. Before You Negotiate, Always Remove Emotion The first thing that you need to do is remove any emotion that you have concerning the offer. Negative emotions will only cloud your judgment and ability to reason. Without clear reasoning, you won’t effectively be able to articulate why you should get more. Analyze All the Parts of Your Offer Package Once you’ve set your goal and removed the emotion, you are ready to analyze the offer components. Now is the time to put on your analytical thinking cap. In almost all cases, if there is a discrepancy with the offer it’s in the numbers. You’ll need to compare your current compensation package against what you would be making as per the job offer. Using a simple spreadsheet or sheet of paper in order to conduct a side-by-side comparison is a great way to analyze the numbers. Start With Your Base Salary Over 90% of the time base salary is the reason for job offer dissatisfaction. Before you get down on your base salary, you’ll want to consider the reasons why you are receiving a low base. You may be receiving a low base because you are taking a job that’s a step down. Remember, taking a step down can be an effective strategy to minimize risk in a career change. Or maybe you were being underpaid in your prior role. Regardless of the reason, it’s important to have a basic understanding of what other people are making in this position. You’ll need to consider the position as well as the industry and geographic region. Different markets can result in different pay for the same role. EXPERT TIP: Network with recruiters or industry contacts to get a firm understanding of salary range for your market. Realistic base salary ranges to expect when targeting an offer increase Once you’ve established your market, you’ll want to ask yourself where this stands against your offer. Unless you’re grossly underpaid or your offer was undervalued (low-balled), you should be in or close to the market range. Common base salary increases average between 5-15% in the world of recruitment. This is what I’ll coin “realistic”. It is possible to get more. Anything’s possible! Negotiating Bonus and/or Commission A bonus is typically paid at the end of a fiscal year and is a result of how well you and the company performed. It’s designated as a percentage of your base salary and formulated on your ability to meet or exceed goals and objectives. You could negotiate a higher bonus but at the end of the day, bonuses are subjective. You as an individual could knock it out of the park from a performance standpoint. However,   if the Corporation does not hit its overall objectives, your bonus could be $0. How to Increase Your Bonus and/or Commission Commission is a percentage paid entirely or partially from individual sales or work completed. Commission is typically a smaller number (%) that pays you on the product sold. It may also have a strong correlation to your monthly income. If you’d like to achieve a higher bonus percentage, make sure you can articulate why. The most effective way to articulate “why” is by quantifying with numbers. One example might be: “I’m making x% now and am hoping for a slight increase to y% due to… I’m confident that I can obtain x in sales for this fiscal year but know that it will almost double my workload which I embrace. With that being said, I’m hoping to increase my commission structure.” Make the conversation short succinct with valid reasons for “why” you deserve a bump. I’ve had more than few candidates leave this conversation successful which resulted in a big payday! If the Numbers Don’t Pan Out, Try This Salary and bonus negotiations aren’t always successful (and that’s okay). If you’ve tried to negotiate the money with no success you may want to think about negotiating non-monetary items. Non-monetary negotiations may allow you to get more. Think: vacation, tuition aid, tuition reimbursement, professional membership dues, parking, tolls, laptop, position title upgrade… The list goes on and on! It’s important that you include these items on your spreadsheet and any nominal value if you’re currently receiving (even if you’re currently unemployed include your past numbers) this benefit. Two of the Most Important Components of Your Negotiation… Practice! Negotiation conversations can be uncomfortable. If this is an area that makes you uncomfortable, spend time practicing. Articulation, positivity, and the right level of confidence, will be your keys to success. You’ll also want to make sure you give negotiation a try. Don’t back out even if you have cold feet! You’ll never know what you could have received if you don’t ask.
